The title is quite impressive, isn’t it? What kind of information this book can have? was my first question and after reading more about the author and the book itself I’ve found that it’s a list of experiences of different people who answers that question.

From time to time, we ask ourselves if we feel good doing what we’re doing and I know that it’s quite complicated to answer when you feel comfortable with the daily routine (sleep -> work -> go out with friends/partner/wife -> go home -> sleep). How our lives can change if we do something that we love and do with passion? I believe that it will change dramatically.

Over all my professional work in software development, I saw a few programmers/project managers/software architects/software testers/etc. that work with passion and you can do great things with them but it’s quite complicated to do anything if you don’t do it with passion.

I love my career but sometimes you fall in the routine and it gets boring. This kind of books are really good pulling you forward and I really recommend you this book if you want to think about what should you do with your life.

Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery by Garr Reynolds, me gusta hacer presentaciones y siempre he probado nuevas técnicas como solo usar imágenes o usar mapas mentales.

I recommend this book for everyone who wants to know everything about security in Java applications. I like “Chapter 1: Security by Default” and “Chapter 2: Basics of Security”, they are a good introduction to security concepts.

I found in this book a better way to express what I always think about the way some sysadmins take care of security,… they only pay attention to application security!

Most security administrators focus on network and infrastructure security and tend to ignore application-specific and content-level vulnerabilities. This leads to application and content-level attacks suck as malicious code injection, cross-site scripting, XML attacks, and so on.

It shows some interesting best practices and strategies to secure java applications and also web services. If you take care of security, you must buy this book.

I found this book in Mel Gorman’s site when I was searching about Linux kernel internals. You can donwload this book from his site based on kernel 2.4 VM or get the printed edition which has notes about kernel 2.6 VM.

You will need to have some knowledge about operating system internals before reading this book. It has approximately 200 theory pages and 500 source code documented pages.

I recommend chapter 8: SLAB Allocator.

In 2001, I started playing with LAMP (GNU/LiNUX, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Some tutorials and the php online documentation were a great help to getting started with this scripting language but they weren’t enough.

In 2003, I bought this book and it helped me a lot to get a strong knowledge of PHP programming. Also in 2003, I got my first job and my very first task was to participate in the development of three applications using PHP. This book is special to me.

Let’s talk about the book itself, the chapters I like and I recommend are:

Chapter 31: PHP and XML

Chapter 32: Web Services

Chapter 36: Security and Cryptography

I also found the Appendix A: PHP for C Programmers very interesting because I had been a C programmer since 1993.

This book is also known as “The Llama Book”. Perl is one of my favorite programming languages. Perl is amazing but it could be a nightmare if you see code programmed by an upset guy.

I found this book very interesting because you can read, read, read, and don’t stop. It’s not boring and if you are planning to learn Perl, I recommend this book.

If you are a perl programmer this book can help you a lot because it explains some concepts behind the design of Perl. Happy hacking!!

Everyone in the Linux world should know about Robert Love, he’s a great hacker. I read some articles he wrote in Linux Journal Magazine and I saw his work in linux kernel source. As you could imagine I bought this book and it didn’t desappoint me like other kernel books did (he explains the concepts behind the design of the kernel scheduler very well).

Let’s talk about the book. I recommend all the chapters, all the book!. I found very useful these chapters:

Chapter 3: Scheduling

Chapter 5: Interrupts and Interrupt Handlers

Chapter 6: Bottom Halves and Deferring Work

Chapter 8: Kernel Synchronization Methods

There is a new edition of this book!
